About Us

MACACA Eco-Defender is developed by DHA Innovators from The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), Perak, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), with support from Leez Plantation and Jabatan Pertanian Kuala Kangsar.

Background study

Habitat loss from suburban development pushes macaques into farms, schools, parks and housing areas. This causes crop damage, broken wiring, damaged water tanks and roofs, vehicle damage, safety risks and zoonotic disease risk.

Reported crop-loss causes (Amlus, M.H. 2025): monkey intrusion 43%, other wildlife 27%, pests and insects 20%, environmental factors 10%.

Conventional methods — traps, noise, firecrackers, decoys, scarecrows, chemicals and authority removal — only work temporarily because monkeys learn and adapt, and some of them harm wildlife.

Our solution

A solar-powered, safe electric fence integrated with the KulimGuard Spray System (KGSS), which sprays kulim (“jungle garlic”) fruit extract as a natural repellent. It changes monkey behaviour through avoidance, without toxins, traps or injury.

The extract is produced by crushing 10 kulim fruits, blending them with 500 mL of water, heating in a water bath at 80°C for 24 hours, then collecting and filtering the solution.

Radius Distance Assay (RDA) results

The team evaluates effectiveness using its own Radius Distance Assay, measuring how monkey distance changes before and after activation:

  • 0–1 m: 100% avoidance — immediate retreat with a warning call.
  • 1–2 m: 92% avoidance — the monkey stops, sniffs the air and retreats.
  • 2–3 m: 78% avoidance — the monkey hesitates and changes direction.
  • Beyond 3 m: effectiveness decreases as extract concentration drops.
  • Beyond 5 m: almost no avoidance response recorded.

Optimum coverage radius is about ±3 m from the dispenser. Deterrent effectiveness decreases as the monkey’s distance from the system increases.
